Diaverum inaugurates a new clinic in Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona, 31 January 2012 – Diaverum, one of the world´s largest independent renal care providers, has inaugurated a new clinic — ‘Centro de Diálisis del Maresme’ — in Pineda de Mar, Barcelona. The new facilities are located in Marconi Street, and will have 25 dialysis stations.
Emilia Palacio, Catalonia Area Manager, says that the opening of a new clinic was “necessary to meet the demands of patients in the area. We are looking all the time at the comfort and the quality of life of our patients, trying to be closer to patients’ homes thereby reducing travel times and distances.
“The facilities combine comfort and functionality while at the same time creating an atmosphere of warmth and modernity. We hope our patients feel revitalised after their treatment.”
Diaverum is the largest independent renal services provider in Europe. The opening of the new clinic in Pineda de Mar is an important investment and is in line with Diaverum’s patient-focus approach and our commitment to quality service provision. The new clinic is equipped with the latest advances in renal therapy and will cover patients from the Nord Maresme area — a wide area that up to now was only served by the Mataro clinic (also belonging to the Diaverum Group).
It will initially treat about 60 patients, although its facilities make it possible to increase this number to a maximum of 150 patients. The dedicated and experienced team comprises two doctors, seven nurses and three assistants.
Diaverum operates 27 dialysis clinics in Spain and a total of more than 240 clinics worldwide. The need for renal replacement therapy is increasing steadily across the globe. The number of end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients exceeded two million globally in 2010. This figure is estimated to double by 2025. For ESRD patients, the only alternative treatments are lifelong dialysis or kidney transplantation.
Most of these patients need to receive dialysis sessions three or four times per week, around four hours per treatment. For them the only alternative possible is hemodialysis treatment for a long time or transplant, but many of them are not good candidates for a transplant.
