Stages of CKD

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) occurs when you suffer from gradual and permanent loss of kidney function over time. There is no way to cure CKD but you can do your best to slow the progression.

Five disease stages

Your kidneys are considered healthy and normal as long as they have a normal filtering function and no signs of blood or protein in the urine. The level of filtering function depends on your age and many other factors that can have an impact on your kidneys. If your kidney function is permanently decreased, you are considered to have CKD. Your kidneys may gradually lose their ability to filter wastes out of your blood. The CKD process is divided into five stages: at stage 1-4, the focus is to preserve kidney function; at stage five, dialysis or transplantation may be the only alternatives for you to cope with your disease.
